CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR FOEGE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 2011

posted Dec 20, 2010 1:05 PM by Zhuo Chen

The CDC Process for Nomination for the Foege Global Health Fellowship Program for 2011

***Call for Nominations***

The William H. Foege Fellowship in Global Health

2011 Application

Please be advised that the Center for Global Health (CGH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now accepting nominations for the William H. Foege Fellowship in Global Health for 2011. The fellowship program is offered for graduate level education at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Please note- all CDC supported nominations for the 2011 fellowship must be submitted to the Center for Global Health, by Feb. 18, 2011, as noted below

The William H. Foege Fellowship in Global Health is a two-year program that allows mid-career professionals from countries other than the United States to earn a master’s degree in International Health from the Rollins School of Public Health. Each year two to four fellows (depending on funds available in the endowment) from developing countries participate in coursework at the university and develop lasting partnerships with mentors at Atlanta-based public health agencies (Emory University, the CDC, the Carter Center, CARE, the Rollins School of Public Health, or the Task Force for Child Survival and Development). Upon completing the program, the fellow must return to governmental or nongovernmental health agencies in their respective countries.  This year CDC nominating offices must provide specific information about how the fellow will be mentored by a CDC HQ staff member and serve in an internship at CDC during their fellowship to meet the terms of the Fellowship warranty by the nominating organization.

Eligibility requirements for the Foege Fellowship include:

Evidence of leadership in advancing public health

A minimum of five full years of work experience in public health

Strong academic background in a field or discipline relevant to public health

Strong English skills supported by TOEFL scores

Acceptable GRE scores (if the fellow does not have a doctoral degree)

Documented relationship to CDC through a partner agency or ministry of health

Documented proposal for specific HQ mentor and internship opportunity (warranty)

Each Foege Fellow will pursue an academic program and participate in professional development opportunities. The Fellowship provides funding for travel between the home country and Atlanta, all tuition and fees for the duration of the academic program, health insurance, a book allowance, monthly stipend for living expenses, funds for professional meetings in the United States, and a laptop computer for each Fellow. All fellows are required to be enrolled as full-time students throughout the duration of the fellowship. The length of the fellowship is 10-24 months, but this is contingent upon whether the Fellow is completing an academic degree.

If a candidate is applying to the Foege Fellowship to earn a PhD at Emory, they must show evidence that they have already applied and been accepted to the doctoral program.  The timing of the fellowship, does not allow for acceptance for a doctoral program following the determination of acceptance as a Foege Fellow.

Application Process:

CDC can submit only a few names to the Foege Fellowship office at Emory University. We have many eligible candidates around the world with whom we work. Prior to sharing the fellowship opportunity announcement with eligible staff in country, we ask that each CDC country office agree who the one nominee will be from their location so that you more effectively manage expectations of interested candidates (note we cannot accept two candidates from one country in one year – the country director will need to select the single nominee).

Nomination packages must be received via e-mail (with all signed supporting materials scanned into the electronic submission) by Shelby Roberts (itb6@cdc.gov) no later than February 18, 2011.  Packages received after that date will not be accepted.

Upon receipt of Program-recommended applications to Shelby Roberts by February 18, 2011 the applications will be reviewed by a selection committee from the Center for Global Health, CDC. Each application will be ranked and the nominating supervisor will be notified of the applicant's CDC ranking status. Upon completion of review, the nomination packages for the top 3 to 4 CDC recommended candidates will be forwarded to the Rollins School of Public Health for the final selection by the Foege Fellowship Selection Committee.

Following the full Foege Fellowship Selection Committee meeting in March, all nominees will be notified of their acceptance into the program as a fellow or alternate, or their non-selection, via e-mail by early April 2011. Those selected for the fellowship must accept the position no later than April 15, 2011. Alternates will be notified at that time of any change in their status.

Individuals who are selected for the fellowship will be required to submit an official application to Emory University. This application will be completed online and will require official transcripts from previous degrees (foreign transcript evaluations by WES or IERF preferred) and official test scores for GRE and TOEFL or IELTS. Students will also be asked to select a program of study and specify to which department they wish to apply.

The Foege Fellowship Program is scheduled to begin at Emory University in mid-August 2011.

Nomination packages must be submitted via e-mail with all supporting materials to Shelby Roberts (itb6@cdc.gov) no later than February 18, 2011.

·         A nomination letter

o   Maximum 2 pages in length from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that describes the individual’s qualifications– leadership qualities, evidence of academic excellence, specific education and training goals, and potential to maintain partnerships and collaboration with the organization. The letter should describe the relationship between the nominee and CDC, plans for future collaboration, the individual’s background, and the reasons why additional training and education are needed.

·         A second reference letter from someone who works with/has worked with the candidate and can speak to their skills. (New requirement this year)

·         Current curriculum vitae (CV) -with clear explanation of work experience.

·         A description of the internship opportunity (warranty) that will be provided at CDC headquarters and the name of the scientist/manager who will serve as mentor to the candidate during the term of the fellowship. (New requirement this year)

·         A personal statement

o   Written by the nominee, describing his/her plans for the Fellowship and future career. This component of the nomination package should contain sufficient detail for the selection committee to understand the motivation and future direction of the nominee and how the Fellowship will contribute specifically to future career plans. The personal statement should be 2-3 pages in length.

TOEFL or IELTS scores

Individuals selected for the Fellowship must have a TOEFL score of 80 or more on the Internet-based exam, 215 or more on the computer-based exam, or a score of 550 or more on the paper exam. Candidates who submit IELTS scores must have received a band score of at least 6.5. Official scores must be received before Fellows can be officially admitted to the RSPH.  NOTE:  If TOEFL scores are not available at the time of nomination, the nomination letter should include a description of the candidate's abilities in oral and written English as well as a plan for when the nominee will take the exam and when scores will be received.

Thank you for nominating qualified professionals from the global partners with whom we work for the fellowship program. If you have questions about the CDC’s nominating process, please contact Shelby Roberts (itb6@cdc.gov). Note: there is no website for information about this program since nomination must come from the agency and not from an individual directly – so only CDC nominators should be contacting Shelby.

Application Checklist:

Additional Recommendation Letter _____

Description of HQ internship (warranty) and name of CDC HQ mentor _____

Curriculum Vitae ______

Personal Statement ______

TOEFL or IELTS scores ______

FOEGE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM 2011-2012

The William H. Foege Global Health Fellowship Program, endowed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), was created to honor the global health legacy of Dr. William H. Foege – former Director of Center for Disease Control (CDC), first Executive Director of the Carter Center, founder of the Task Force for Global Health, distinguished Presidential scholar at Emory University, Senior Advisor to the Gates Foundation and renowned public health statesman. Recipients of the Fellowship are individuals who have demonstrated their commitment to the vision and passion of Dr. Foege. Given Dr. Foege’s seminal leadership in Atlanta’s public health organizations and institutions, the Foege Fellowship is particularly committed to developing and nurturing a cadre of public health practitioners who will be leaders in the Atlanta-based organizations that constitute the “public health capital of the world” – CARE, The Carter Center, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University, The Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH), and the Task Force for Global Health. The Foege Fellowship program is only five years old but of the 19 Fellows to date, 14 have completed their MPH degree and taken up major public health responsibilities around the world.  There are currently five Foege Fellows: Mr. Gilbert Boredison (Madagascar), Mr. Joseph Davies (Sierra Leone), Dr. Herti Herjati (Indonesia), Dr. Andrina Mwansambo (Malawi), and Ms. Rose Wanjala (Kenya).

Requirements for the Fellowship include a strong academic background in a field or discipline relevant to public health, strong English skills supported by TOEFL or IELTS scores, acceptable GRE scores for those who do not hold a doctoral degree, a documented relationship to a host Atlanta-based public health organization, at least five years of field experience, and evidence of leadership in advancing public health. Each of the sponsoring Atlanta-based public health organizations ranks the final nominations on these criteria before the selection committee.  The selection committee discusses the nomination package and the rankings and then selects the finalists for the Foege Fellowship.  For the academic year 2011-2012, we will select only two new Foege Fellows.

Each Foege Fellow will be expected to pursue an academic program as well as participate in professional development opportunities. Potential Fellows who are interested in a doctoral program (PhD) must first be admitted to a PhD program at Emory.  This means that all documentation has been submitted to the relevant doctoral program and that the nominee has been notified of admission to the doctoral program.  The Fellowship will not consider support for doctoral study unless the nominee has first been admitted to a PhD program.  Although Foege Fellows are not required to complete a degree, they are required to be enrolled as full-time students throughout the duration of the fellowship. Additionally, each fellow will have a warranty relationship with an Atlanta-based public health organization, the RSPH and the BMGF upon completion of studies and upon return to his/her country. The warranty should include designation of a mentor in Atlanta from the nominating organization.

The Fellowship provides funding for travel between the home country and Atlanta, all tuition and fees for the duration of the academic program, health insurance, a book allowance, a monthly stipend for living expenses, funds for professional meetings in the United States, a laptop computer and printer for each Fellow.

We anticipate that most Fellows will be degree seeking at the RSPH but there may well be Fellows that would benefit from course work in other academic units at Emory University as a non-degree candidate.  The length of the Fellowship is between 10 and 24 months depending upon whether the Fellow is enrolled in an MPH or equivalent degree program.

The Foege Fellowship Committee is charged with selecting the Foege Fellows from nominations received by the Atlanta-based public health organizations.

Nominees will be informed that they were selected as recipients for the Fellowship, alternates for the Fellowship, or not selected for the Fellowship. Those selected for the Fellowship will need to accept the Fellowship by April 15, 2011. . At that time, those selected as alternates for the Fellowship will then be updated on their status for the Fellowship.

The individuals selected for the fellowship will then be required to submit an official application to Emory University. This application will be completed online and will require official transcripts from previous degrees (foreign transcript evaluations by WES or IERF preferred), official test scores for GRE and TOEFL or IELTS. Students will also be asked to select a program of study and specify to which department they wish to apply.

If selected, the Fellow would begin his/her program at Emory University in mid-August 2011.

Thanks very much for your assistance in nominating the best candidates for the Foege Fellowships. If you have any questions about the program or the nominating process, please contact Shelby Roberts at itb6@cdc.gov or 404-498-1601

Postdoctoral Research Fellow for Global Change Project in Health, Environment & Sustainable Fish Production

posted Dec 1, 2010 9:07 AM by Zhuo Chen   [ updated Dec 1, 2010 9:07 AM ]

Applications are invited for a researcher to work in a stimulating and challenging research team environment on a project that combines UQ expertise in food and nutrition with environmental expertise in fisheries sustainability

The Role: The successful applicant will conduct research on a project that combines UQ expertise in food / nutrition with environmental expertise in fisheries sustainability. The title of the project is “Reconciling Dietary Guidance to Increase Fish Consumption with the Sustainability of Global Seafood Production”. posted Nov 29, 2010 6:24 AM by Zhuo Chen   [ updated Dec 1, 2010 9:14 AM ]

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is in the process of recruiting a Program Evaluator.  NACDD is one of the leading public health organizations in the United States, committed to building capacity within State Chronic disease programs.  The Program Evaluator will create a framework and process for evaluating the effectiveness of all NACDD Councils and Programs.  The program evaluator will conduct some data collection and analysis themselves; but will also be responsible for training NACDD members, staff and consultants to interview members and record information. He/she will create a plan for using findings to increase programming efficiency and effectiveness, and quality and member satisfaction, and will be required to deliver regular and annual reports to all stakeholders.  Evaluation designs and data collection methods and sources may vary, and the ideal candidate will have experience with a variety of these. The ideal candidate will hold a doctorate in Social or Behavioral Science, Organizational Psychology, Educational Psychology, Human Factors, Epidemiology or a related field, although a Master's degree with significant relevant experience may also be considered.  Candidates should have experience in applied program evaluation, training, and/or health services research within public health; some experience with programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is highly preferred.
