Public Health Seminar on Infectious Diseases and Vaccines (Perimeter Church, December 10, 11:30 am -12:30 pm)

Dear All,

 

I am enthusiastic to announce that the North America Public Health Forum (NAPHF, www.naphf.org), jointly with the Association of Chinese Professionals (ACP, http://www.acp-atlanta.org) and Parent Association of Atlanta Contemporary Chinese Academy (ACCA, http://www.acca-web.org/), will host a seminar on Infectious Diseases and Vaccines at Perimeter Church (9500 Medlock Bridge Rd, Duluth, GA 30097) on December 10, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm.      

 

Special thanks go to Xiyan Xu, Fujie Xu, and Helen Ding who will speak about issues of infectious diseases and vaccines as members of the NAPHF.  I am thankful for Shaohua Hu, President of ACP, for his generous support.  I also owe thanks to NAPHF board members such as Zheng Li, Yinan Peng, Chengbin Wang, and Yi Pan for their tireless efforts. 

 

Since this is the first public health seminar of the NAPHF to the Chinese community and the topic should be of great interest to the general public, I kindly suggest that you attend it and invite your friends to attend it, if possible.  Attached please find the flyer in Chinese.  Thank you.

Fall Outing of NAPHF/CDC-CSA at Jones Bridge Park, November 5, 2:00-6:00 pm

Dear All,

 

You are cordially invited to attend the fall outing of NAPHF/CDC-CSA at Jones Bridge Park, November 5, 2:00-6:00 pm.  Jones Bridge Park (http://www.gwinnettcounty.com/portal/gwinnett/Departments/CommunityServices/ParksandRecreation/OurParksandFacilities/GuidetoYourParks/JonesBridgePark) is a scenic park in Norcross that is very family-friendly and appropriate for group gathering.   

 

This is the first outing organized by the 2011-2013 NAPHF Board.  Your attendance and support is greatly appreciated.  If you plan to attend, please send an email to Xin Xu (iip5@cdc.gov) or Xiaohui Zhuo (iip6@cdc.gov) to indicate the number of attendees and the number of dishes you will bring.  If you prefer not to cook that day, you can join us in ordering foods from a restaurant and the charge is $10/person or $20/family. 

 

There are a number of activities that may be enjoyable to you and/or your kids, for example, playing in the children playgound, playing balls, walking on the trail, looking over chattahoochee river, and so on.  More importantly, you will know better your CDC Chinese colleagues and your kids will find new friends to play with.  During dinner time we plan on some entertainment.  If you have any entertainment idea, please send it to Yi Pan (jnu5@cdc.gov).  We welcome all forms of entertainment (singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, martial arts, drawing, quipping, etc.) from all adults and children.

Dr. Dale John Hu, MD, MPH, is team leader of the Epidemiology Research Team, Division of Viral Hepatitis, CDC. He received his MD from University of California, San Diego Medical School in 1987 and MPH from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene & Public Health in 1989. Dr. Hu has a distinguished career at CDC. He served as Associate Director for Science and Acting Director of Division of AIDS, STD and TB Laboratory Research, NCHSTP during 2003-2004, and Acting Associate Director for Laboratory Science, NCHSTP, during 2004-2005. After that he served as Medical Officer at the Division of Birth Defects & Dev. Disabilities (DBDDD), NCBDDD till 2008.

Dale received numerous awards for his service and excellence in science, including DHHS Secretary's Award for Distinguished Service in 1997; the Third Annual Samuel Lin Award (Asian Pacific American Officers Committee, USPHS) in 2000; the Charles C. Shepard Science Award in Laboratory and Methods in 2003; the U.S. Public Health Service Outstanding Service Medal, in 2004, and U.S. Public Health Service Meritorious Service Medal in 2006. He has published more than 90 scientific articles.

As the largest Chinese professional talent association in Atlanta, U.S., the Association of Chinese Professionals (ACP) is an independently registered, non-political, non-profit professional organization. The goal of ACP is to utilize the two great natural resources of the members for their self-improvement, prosperity and community well-being. These two resources are:

(1)    expertise in science, technology, management, culture, education and other related areas
(2)    the members' natural connections with China

The most members of ACP have Master or Doctorate degree in science, engineering, art, education, law, medicine, business administration, and other areas. Most of them work in companies of small to large size, holding managerial, research, and development positions. These characteristics provide a unique opportunity for the members and communities alike to benefit from this pool of talent.

ACP promotes cultural, economical, and technological cooperation and exchange between the US and China by encouraging its members' active involvement and by providing services and opportunities for friendship, networking, and collaborations among its members and between members and their communities.

ACP publishes its bi-monthly newsletter to enhance the communication among its members and between ACP and other communities. Every two month, ACP has a theme meeting.

ACP hosts a variety of programs and activities, with the examples like:

  • Professional seminars and workshops: designed to enhance members' skill and knowledge in leadership, communication, and management
  • Tours of high tech and R&D companies and facilities: designed to maintain and improve members' technical and professional knowledge and skills
  • Education seminars and workshops: designed to raise the awareness and exchange the information of children's education and development both in academic and extracurricular activities. Hosting or co-hosting delegations and business groups from the Greater China region to help members connect and pursue collaborative business activities
  • Social activities: usually held around a major holiday, provide opportunities for members to get together and to share knowledge and experience

CAPT Joannie Shen, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D. is a medical officer of the US Public Health Service (USPHS). She chairs the Leadership and Strategic Planning subcommittee of the Asian Pacific American Officers Council and is an ex officio member of the Physician Professional Advisory Committee which provides advice and consultation to the Surgeon General on issues relating to the professional practice of the medical category. Prior to her commission to the USPHS, she was a resident physician and clinical instructor at the UCLA School of Medicine. She was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador by the California State Secretary for public service in Emilia-Romagna representing California.

Dr. Shen’s tour of duty began at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where she served as a Senior Clinical Investigator conducting neuroscience studies and clinical trials. She later served with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specialized in high-risk medical devices for pre-market approval and post-market surveillance. Most recently she joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) worked on California Governor's Comprehensive State Health Reform initiatives. Currently Dr. Shen is with the Air Pollution and Respiratory Health Branch which funds the National Asthma Control Program. She provides technical support to state grantees and partners, and acts as the principle investigator on several research projects with a focus on health care quality improvement. Dr. Shen represents CDC advising the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) on healthcare quality performance measures to improve healthcare quality especially towards optimal delivery of asthma care.

CAPT Shen graduated cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from University of Southern California with honor thesis in neurophysiology. She was a US-Japan intercultural exchange scholar and a university scholar to Cambridge University. Dr. Shen received her doctorate in medicine (M.D.) from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, masters in public health (MPH) and doctorate in philosophy (Ph.D.) in Health Services Research from the UCLA School of Public Health. Dr. Shen is double-board certified by the American Board of Family Physicians and the American Board of Preventive Medicine. She is a member of the American College of Preventive Medicine, International Society for Environmental Epidemiology, International Society for Indoor Air Quality, among others. Community services: Mobile Med physician, Committee of 100 guest mentor, Special Volunteer at the National Library of Medicine, and health column contributor to Hong Kong Wan Chai District.

Dr. Shen will talk about her experience from post-Katrina deployments as a public health officer of the USPHS. CAPT Shen was deployed twice after Hurricane Katrina/Wilma/Rita. She found the post-Katrina experience in Pascaquella intriguing and became interested in environmental justice and social determinants of health.

(1) Chinese Business Association of Atlanta

 

CBAA is a non-profit organization founded in 1992 with over 100 members. CBAA aims to 

           promote business and business activities by creating a business network and passing business opportunities to its members,

           help local economic development by attracting business opportunities and investments from China to the Atlanta area,

           aid America companies to do businesses with and open business market in China,

           promote the cultural understanding and exchange between the U.S. and China.

For the last 18 years, CBAA has presented to Atlanta metropolitan area high quality shows, which attracted the largest audience from local communities and surrounding states. Many states and local dignitaries have attended the show. Government officials from China as well as from embassy and consulate general were also present for the show. CCTV (China Central Television) and local Atlanta TV stations have broad casted the shows several times.

 

The upcoming 19th Chinese New Year Celebration Show, “Celebrate Diversity through Arts”, will be held at the Atlanta Symphony Hall in Woodruff Arts Center, the first class theater in Atlanta, at 3:00 PM, Sunday, January 16, 2011 (see attachment). 

 

It will once again present the most famous Chinese cultural performances and to bring people together to celebrate the year of the past and to look forward to a prosperous new year ahead. Not only will the audience be able to admire a show performed by high-level professionals, but they will also enjoy the luxury and comfort of a first-class theater facility. 

 

Dr. Lyna Zhang has been with CBAA for two years, as one of the board of directors (BOD) responsible for activities, events, and communities services. There are also other two BODs working at CDC (Dr. Jufu Chen and Dr. Yaohua Luo). They will be sharing their experience of servicing local communities with naphf/CDC-CSA.

Deputy Director, Office for Disease Control and Emergency Response, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Dr. Yu is the Deputy Director of the Office for Disease Control and Emergency Response, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. He takes charge of acute infectious disease surveillance system in China and supervises rapid response teams to provide technical resources for the detection and control of emerging infectious. He also leads teams for maintenance of comprehensive knowledge of all country about emerging infectious diseases. In addition, he acts as principle investigator of several researches on emerging infectious diseases in China and conjunctive director to coordinate WHO, US CDC, NIH, Oxford University & Welcome Trust and other technical agencies.

His research interests include epidemiology and clinical features, and etiology of emerging infectious disease, e.g. SARS, avian influenza and Streptococcus virus.; surveillance on seasonal influenza, human infection with avian influenza virus, pneumococcal disease, and population-based pneumonia; disease burden of respiratory infections, e.g. seasonal influenza, pneumococcal disease and pneumonia; efficacy, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness on influenza vaccine and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine.

Currently, Dr. Yu is a member of the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) Working Group on influenza vaccines and immunization, member of the WHO epidemiological working group on Pandemic 2009 Influenza A(H1N1) , member of the National Expertise Committee on SARS Control and Emergency Response, fellow and member of the National Committee on Standards of Infectious Diseases and Expertise Committee of Influenza Control and Prevention within China’s Ministry of Health.

Mr. Zhang Feng is the Director of the Executive Office of the Chinese Centre for Health Education (Health News and Communication Centre, Ministry of Health, China). He was appointed by the Centre in January, 2010. The Centre is under the straight administration of the Ministry of Health (MOH), and focuses on conducting national level research, training, international corporation, campaigns, project management and other relevant tasks in China’s health education and communication. The Executive Office reports directly to the Director of the Centre and helps the Director to coordinate and organize internal and external affairs of the Centre.

Prior to his employment in the Centre, Mr. Zhang had been working for China Daily, China’s Global English Newspaper since August, 1998. With China Daily, he specialized in the health care fields and also covered foreign affairs, environmental protection, culture, economics and sports. He was the No.1 journalist of health news report in China Daily with extensive experiences and achievements in reporting SARS, HIV/AIDS and other significant health and medical issues. At the same time, he also has done research in health communication, representing China to present on SARS crisis information communication at WHO workshop in Singapore in 2004 and presented at many others panels held by MOH and CDC. He has been the assistant editor of the official newspaper for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games , named “the Olympians”, which was published by China Daily. He had been the assistant director of the Editor’s Office of China Daily since January, 2007.

Mr. Zhang received his BS in English Language and Literature from Xiamen University, in Southeast China’s Fujian Province. He also holds a Masters degree in Communication from the News and Communication College of the Peking University, China.
